Don’t let age get in the way of travel insurance

When you’re travelling, whether in the UK or abroad, it’s important to have travel insurance in place in case of emergencies. Of course, it’s all well and good saying this but it can be difficult for those over a certain age or suffering from ill health to find an insurance policy to cover them.

Over-50’s group Saga have advised that around half of those over 65 have been refused travel insurance, which sounds worrying at first but less so when you read that 97% managed to find cover in the end. Despite the difficulties it may cause, it is imperative to disclose any on-going or previous health conditions as failure to do so may lead to invalidation of the insurance policy and no compensation being paid in the event of a claim. Although travel insurance starts to increase in cost from around 50, in most cases is it possible to obtain insurance regardless of age or health problems.

It is also important not to be fooled into thinking that the European Health Insurance Card will entitle you to adequate cover should something happen abroad. While it does cover basic costs, private clinics and hospitals are not covered; most cases in Spain, Turkey and Greece will be referred there, however. The EHIC also does not cover the cost of getting home once the patient has recovered. Outside of Europe, huge medical bills can quickly mount up if injured or taken ill in the United States. With these bills likely to run into the thousands, it makes good sense to have adequate insurance in place before travelling.
