Public Liability Insurance – Why is it required?
However long you may have been in business and however careful you are, there is always the possibility that an accident could happen. Should you or your business be held liable for the accident or the damage that has occurred, then you could be facing a sizeable claim.
It is for these occasions: however unlikely they may be, that Public Liability Insurance is required. Whilst not compulsory, it is obviously good business sense to ensure that you have a Public Liability Insurance in place. Having such a policy should provide you with peace of mind knowing that your business is protected against a large number of possible unfortunate eventualities. In the worst case scenario, you or your business may be held responsible for an injury caused to a member of the public or a client. Depending upon the degree of injury suffered, you may be faced with an extensive claim. Again, damage to another person’s property for which your business is held liable can cause prohibitive expense, both of which can be dealt with by your Public Liability Insurance.
Examples of claims dealt with by Public Liability Insurance.
1. The employee of a firm of scaffolder’s dropped a tool whilst working at height. The tool eventually came to rest on someone else’s car leaving a large dent. The claim made against the scaffolding company was met by the Company’s Public Liability Insurance, with the exception of the policy excess.
The claim came to just over £1000 but imagine if the tool had struck a member of the public and caused personal injury. A claim for many thousands of pounds could have been made against the scaffolding company and they would have looked to their Public Liability Insurance to cover them.
2. A plumber working in a domestic dwelling failed to completely solder a pipe joint. Later after he had left the building the owner turned their heating system on and subsequently a leak caused some hundreds of pounds of damage to decoration and carpets. Once again, the plumber’s Public Liability Insurance paid for all of the damage, with the exception of a small excess.
How much Public Liability Insurance do you require?
The cover we offer starts at a minimum of £1,000,000. After this we offer either £2,000,000 or £5,000,000 of cover. All three of these amounts can be purchased directly from our online quotes facility. Should you require a higher level of cover then you will need to talk to one of our business insurance advisers and they will obtain a quotation for you.
Obviously the amount of cover that you require will depend upon the nature and size of your business. Additionally, you need to consider the premises you work on and also the possible costs of injury claims that could potentially arise.
Should you wish to discuss this with us, please will ring us on (01480) 402460.
Remember, many customers will now want to see your insurance before committing to a contract.
Will Public Liability Insurance cost me a lot of money?
Much like the amount of cover that you require the cost of Public Liability Insurance will depend upon the size and nature of your business. For a single tradesman the cost of the insurance can be as low as £50. Also, the level of cover that you require will be reflected in the cost although, doubling the level of cover will not necessarily double the cost of the policy.
If you are an established business and have a claim free history this will obviously be taken into consideration by any insurer who is quoting as it reflects a duty of care has been taken.
Is there anything I should be aware of when purchasing Public Liability Insurance?
All insurance policies are subject to terms, conditions, excesses and exclusions, all of which vary from insurer to insurer. Therefore it is important that you check the policy document to ensure that you are covered for all that you wish to be covered for. A copy of the Policy Document and the Policy Summary is available online and can be retrieved once the quotation is started by clicking on the ‘Document Tab’.
When checking the policy details it is also important to also ensure that your business is covered for the risks that it might incur. If, for example, you work at a height, it is important to make certain that there is not a height restriction within the policy. Also, if you work with heat, you will need to be sure that the policy does not exclude this.
